Hong Kong late this year or the introduction of digital audio broadcasting

The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government announced the digital audio broadcasting on the 11th development plan, said it would begin opening up a can accommodate up to 13 channels of frequency bands is expected to digital audio broadcasting is expected to launch later this year.

The SAR Government Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development, Mrs Rita Lau said that Hong Kong has been launched at the end of 2007 digital television terrestrial broadcasting, the Government plans to introduce digital audio broadcasting the next step could be expected to achieve at the end of the year.

Mrs Lau said the new digital audio broadcast will be market-driven principle, the HKSAR Government will first open a 1.5 MHz band, used to provide digital audio services. If the prevailing Eureka147 using current digital audio broadcasting technology, which can accommodate 7-band sound quality comparable to compact discs channels, coverage may be over the whole territory. If we adopt the more advanced DAB + digital audio broadcasting technology, this band can even provide up to 13 sound quality comparable to CD sound channel.

Mrs Lau said the SAR Government has proposed operators to share transmission facilities-sharing to install digital audio broadcasting signal transmission equipment. The Peak in Hong Kong’s seven stations only need to install digital audio transmission equipment, it can be used for digital audio broadcasting.

The SAR government has also announced a mobile TV service development framework updates that will first open a special high-frequency band, for the development of mobile TV services. Mobile TV spectrum auction will be in the second quarter.
